Physical Education

CI PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students are screened in 3rd grade. Students must take it at least 1 cycle a year to stay eligible. This course is designed for the advanced physical education student. The students will experience a variety of activities in each cycle. Fitness work, relays, and lead-up games will be sued for basic skill development with a concentration on team sports. Sportsmanship and cooperation will also be highlighted.
The National Test of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, FitnessGram, which assesses the physical and aerobic fitness of the students will be given each year. This will help the students make positive changes and build the healthy habits they need to be successful well into the future. Low impact cardio activities, flexibility, and strength exercise program with an emphasis on learning fitness for life will be the targeted goal.

SILVER GYMNASTICS
Students will learn basic tumbling skills and stunts on all pieces of apparatus. The students will perform individually and in small groups. They will develop strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, self-discipline, body awareness and body control.

GOLD GYMNASTICS
Students will be able to successfully execute 80% of the required skills on each type of apparatus.

CI GYMNASTICS
This is a full year course.  Students are selected for this class, based on tryouts. Students will be required to successfully execute a front handspring or back handspring in order to remain in the class.  Scheduling conflicts will be handled on a case by case basis.

BALLET/MODERN DANCE
Students will learn basic barre work and center floor combinations. Emphasis will be on body alignment, terminology, musicality, and proper execution of steps. Ballet shoes will be provided during ballet technique days.

JAZZ
This course provides an introduction to the basic movements of jazz dance, including warm-ups, body isolation, stylized walks and short combos. As the school year continues and dancers develop more difficult movements will be introduced, including leaps and turns.

CI DANCE
This is a full year course for dancers with a strong level of skill and a desire to dance. Students will study all forms of dance (ballet, jazz, tap, modern, hip hop) with a Cycle 1 focus on technique. Students are screened in June for admittance into this class. *Incoming 3rd grade students are screened in September for admittance.  Scheduling conflicts will be handled on a case by case basis.

CI DANCE COMPANY
This is full year course for dancers with the highest levels of technique, skills and strong desire to dance. Dancers will study all techniques of dance such as jazz, tap, ballet, modern and hip hop. Students are expected to perform on several occasions. In order to participate in this class, the students are screened in June for the next school year.  Scheduling conflicts will be handled on a case by case basis.

Intro to Dance
Third grade students enrolled in Intro to Dance will develop a strong foundation in dance movement and an understanding of energy, time, space, body and action. They will learn simple dance combinations incorporating modern, ballet and jazz movements. Dance history and musicality will be emphasized throughout the cycle and students will have the opportunity to choreograph their own movement and create their own mini dances.

HIP HOP
This class focuses on the various popular urban styles of highly energetic and free movement evolved from the hip-hop culture. Performed to hip-hop music, dancers will discover the exciting history of “B-Boy Grooves”, perform non-inversion breakdancing skills, and execute simple routines influenced by this unique style and culture.

DANCE UNLIMITED
This is an exciting Introduction to the many styles of Dance Techniques. Dancers will discover the differences in styles through formal training, vocabulary, history and performance. Simple movement sequences, elements and coordinated patterns will be demonstrated. No formal training needed.
