May 1, 2018

Hello Hillside. Hope everyone enjoyed the documentary “Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age” and the discussion that followed. We look forward to an ongoing dialogue about technology across all grades. And please save the date for the cyber awareness parent forum on May 8. There are many other happenings in May – from ‘Red Nose Day’ to PARCC Testing and Teacher Appreciation Day.

SHOUT OUTS to Barbie Casasus, Beth Fleischer, and Tessa Vining for making Hillside’s first movie screening happen.

REMINDER: “SCREENAGERS” VIEWING AND DISCUSSION FOR FIFTH GRADERS THIS WEEK

As part of a district initiative, our school counselor Ms. Scott, is showing the movie to all 5th graders and will now be hosting discussion sessions with each 5th grade class throughout the week. This provides an opportunity for parents, teachers and kids to have an ongoing dialogue around our technology use.

TAKE PART IN ‘RED NOSE DAY’ AND CONTRIBUTE TO CHILD POVERTY – POP UP MAY 9

Hillside is supporting ‘Red Nose’ Day on May 24, a global initiative to fight child poverty. To date, the initiative has raised $100 million and reached more than 8 million children through various organizations and programs. Locally, Montclair is painting the town red to raise awareness and money to this important cause. One of the charities we can help is the Covenant House, a network of shelters for homeless youth, which has a shelter in our community. Additionally, funds will be donated to the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of America, Feeding America, and several other organizations that help those who are living in poverty. Learn more here.

So what are we doing? To celebrate, we’ll be doing a special Red Nose Day Art Installation on and around Hillside. For every $50 donated we will have an additional installation. No amount is too large or too small to help. Donate now.

To contribute to the cause and help to paint the town red, sign up for our Pop Up Workshop on May 9. Students will make their own ‘Red Nose Day’ Art Installation to hang inside or outside of your home. Register here. The $25 fee includes materials and a red nose to wear while decorating. There are a limited number of spots, so please register as soon as you can to secure your spot.
