April, 17, 2018

Hello Hillside. We have an exciting and stimulating week ahead starting with a PTA Meeting on Monday, April 16 at 7 pm and our first-ever, all-day Science Day event on Friday, April 20. See below for more information.

PTA MEETING NEXT WEEK ON APRIL 16 AT 7 PM IN LIBRARY

Join us for this PTA meeting at 7 pm in the Library. We welcome Jennifer Goforth, Director of K-12 STEM for Montclair Public Schools, Department of Equity, Curriculum and Instruction, to join us to share information about middle school math placement. For Fifth grade families, a letter was sent from the District via email on March 2. She can also answer any questions about the Middle School math curriculum for all families.

Additionally, there are several open PTA positions for next year. If you are interested in getting involved, come to the meeting or email the PTA .

SCIENCE DAY IS THIS FRIDAY APRIL 20 – CHECK OUT YOUR FAQS

Science Fair is this Friday! Refer to the FAQs that were sent home last week to learn more and see how you can get involved. This is an exciting event for Hillside and we can’t wait for this dynamic, interactive experience, showcasing science and innovation! It's an opportunity for our students to be inspired by scientists from various fields, to see an interactive show from Philly's Franklin Institute, and to do hands on activities in the classrooms. If you have any questions, please email Vanessa Schreiber. The following homerooms still need volunteers. Sign up here to help.

3rd Grade - Chung, Harris, Gorcica, Masuzzo, Schatzman, Scriffiano

4th Grade - Gerdes, Hart, Hill, Senior, Traina

5th Grade - Eckhardt, Brantner, Bostic, Bongiovanni, Hart

SCREENS AND KIDS - SEE ‘SCREENAGERS’ DOCUMENTARY AT HILLSIDE APRIL 26 AT 6:30 PM

The SATp Cyber-Awareness team is hosting a viewing and discussion of the documentary “Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age.” This adults-only event will take place on Thursday, April 26th from 6:30-8:30PM. All Hillside parents and caregivers are invited to attend. To learn more, contact Barbie Casasus here.

DISTRICTWIDE ‘SCREENAGERS’ VIEWING FOR FIFTH GRADERS APRIL 30

As part of a district initiative our school counselor, Ms. Scott, will be showing the movie to all 5th graders April 30th and hosting discussion sessions with each 5th grade class throughout the week. This provides an opportunity for parents, teachers and kids to have an ongoing dialogue around our technology use. Additionally, as a follow up, there will be a Cyber-Awareness Parent Forum on Tuesday, May 8th, 7:00-8:30PM. This time will be spent discussing concrete tools to use when it comes to managing family technology. Stay tuned for more information on the parent forum. To learn more, contact Barbie Casasus here.

MFEE SHOWDOWN FUNDRAISER APRIL 21 – HILLSIDE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATING

MFEE is hosting its biggest fundraiser of the year, Showdown Montclair on April 21st. Showdown is an amazing party with a talent battle twist. Fourteen acts comprised of your friends and neighbors will duke it out for the title of Montclair's Hidden Talent Gem. We also have brave Lip Sync Battlers!

Acts have to raise $750 to compete. Donate what you can to help them get to the stage. ALL proceeds flow back to your school to provide every student with an extraordinary education. Representing Hillside School are:

Hillside's 3rd Grade Teacher Ms. Masuzzo & Son!

Hillside teacher Leslie Masuzzo is an incredible singer! You won't want to miss her perform with her wildly talented guitarist son, Ben. This MHS junior can shred with the best of them, and he's planned powerhouse performance for the Showdown!

Ben's also recruited his dad, bass-player Dennis Masuzzo and a few other local musicians to round out this fun intergenerational group. Support this teen and his family as they strive to raise funds for our schools.

Hillside Mom, Megan Reilly

Reared in Memphis, TN, Megan Reilly moved to NYC at age 22 where she assembled an amazing band of musicians from bands like Perl Ubu, The Mekons and The Bongos. After supporting the release of her third record, The Well, in 2013 she took a hiatus to raise her two daughters here in Montclair. One daughter is at Hillside and her younger starts at Nishuane in the fall.

Help this talented mom get to the Showdown stage. Click below to get a peek at her unique ethereal sound!

Hillside Dad, Paul Schneider

Paul Schneider feels like the most he's done to help his kids' schools is attend a Halloween party. Formerly with Epic records, this gifted singer/songwriter is bringing his tunes to the Showdown Stage. Let's show this talented and humble dad how much we appreciate the leap he's taking for our schools! Donate what you can to get him to the stage! Click below to watch a short video about Paul.
