February 6, 2018

“Start with Hello.” This week, Ms. Scott is leading “Start with Hello” week, an initiative through the Sandy Hook Promise organization. The goal is to raise awareness about the impact of social isolation. Hillside will highlight this theme by starting each the day with a message about the power of “Hello.” The specific activities this week are detailed in the Principal’s Newsletter, sent on Feb. 2.

SCIENCE DAY IS FRIDAY APRIL 20: GET INVOLVED AND MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Hillside is excited to announce the inaugural Science Day! It’s an exciting and interactive way to expose our children to science! As part of this special day, students will hear from a variety of people who have a science or engineering career. We need your help recruiting science and engineering professionals who represent a diverse workforce. Some examples include: wildlife biologists, chemical engineers, food chemists, astronomers, doctors, nurses, civil engineers, physicists, etc. If you or someone you know would be an ideal candidate for the career panel, please complete the form sent home or contact us here.

FINGER KNITTING POP UP WORKSHOP THIS THURSDAY, FEB 8

Who needs knitting needles when you have 10 wonderful fingers! Finger knitting uses the same technique as traditional knitting, but without any challenging needles to worry about. Make a beautiful infinity scarf for Valentine's Day, or just make something for yourself. We provide the yarn and your kids provide their fingers for this one hour, after school workshop from 3:50 to 4:50 pm. Ali Sherwin is a Hillside mom who is excited to share her skills. Sign up here.

READ TO SUCCEED

Hillside is participating in Read to Succeed sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the Wednesday, February 21, 2018 and submits their Reading Log to their ELA teacher will be eligible for a free admission ticket, valid at the Six Flags Great Adventure Theme Park, in Jackson, NJ. The Reading Logs along with additional information are being sent home.

HILLSIDE BOX TOP COLLECTION GOING STRONG!

We had a great response to our call for Box Tops! After just one week, the classes with the most box tops in a very close race are: Mrs. Scriffiano, Ms. Senior, and Mr. Hart. Keep them coming by sending your Box Top coupons in a zip-lock bag or an envelope labeled with the classroom number and teacher’s name and watch for new results next week. The class bringing in the most box tops will win a prize. More importantly, every box top adds 10 cents to the PTA funds. Last year we raised over $1,000!

NEW DYSLEXIA GROUP

Is your child showing signs of struggle while reading? Does s/he have a diagnosis of dyslexia or are you in the process of figuring her/his needs out? Feel free to connect with other parents with similar questions and concerns. ContactHeather Dibble for more information.
