Our language program is guided by the highest standards of foreign language education, including the National Standards for Foreign Language Teaching, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) World Language Standards, and the criteria set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). With these frameworks in mind, our students embark on a journey to develop comprehensive language proficiency across interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes, alongside a deep exploration of Chinese culture and its connections to other disciplines and communities. Inside the classroom, our instructors employ a diverse range of strategies to promote comprehension and active engagement, fostering an environment where the target language is used extensively.
MANDARIN
Our curriculum encompasses a variety of classes, including Mandarin 1, Mandarin 2, Mandarin 3, and CI Mandarin. Structured on a three-cycle basis per academic year, our program encourages students to participate in all three cycles to gain consistent and comprehensive instruction, leading to greater language proficiency. However, we also offer flexibility for those interested in exploring Chinese language and culture to enroll for one to two cycles.
Mandarin 1 serves as an introductory class, specifically designed for Mandarin exploration and offered exclusively during Cycle 1 for third graders in their rotation schedule. Covering fundamental topics such as basic greetings, numbers, and personal identities, this course lays a solid foundation for further language acquisition.
Students who have prior experience in Mandarin studies or have completed the rotation schedule at Hillside are eligible to enroll in Mandarin 2. To progress to Mandarin 3, students must have completed at least two cycles of Mandarin 2.
CI Mandarin is designed for students who have completed at least 2 Cycles of Mandarin 3 classes. With a curriculum that revisits and reinforces content from Mandarin 1, Mandarin 2, and Mandarin 3, this course focuses on daily routines, school schedules, telling time and dates, and writing in Chinese characters.
Each cycle of our program is centered around a specific theme: Cycle 1 explores "All About Me," Cycle 2 delves into "My School Days," and Cycle 3 embraces "Home, Sweet Home." Throughout each level, the curriculum spirals upward, building upon previous content while exploring new topics and skills.
