NOTES:

Current SATp Initiatives

Parent Forums: This year we hosted four parent forums, in which all parents/caregivers were invited to attend. These forums were discussion opportunities with regard to topics that were parent derived. Discussion topics included cyber awareness and Mindful Parenting. We are very interested in expanding this initiative with regard to parent involvement and topics discussed. (Barbie)

Health and Wellness: A healthier school environment is one in which all students have access to health services. The school setting supports students’ well-‐being and student health builds a foundation for learning. In this environment, good nutrition, physical activity, basic safety, and education about making healthy choices allow students to thrive. In a healthy school, students learn-‐through lessons and through example-‐to value their own health and that of the environment. (i.e. Health Curriculum; Bike-‐Walk to School Day; Field Day) (Kala)

Hillside Care: Hillside’s very own platform for caring for others. This initiative organizes service to others. Some examples of the work has been our coat drives, food drives, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -‐ Day of Service, Make-‐A-‐Wish, Thanksgiving and Holiday Food for Families, along with a whole host of other opportunities that arise. (Gina)

School Safety: The School Safety Committee currently is working to improve upon and sustain best practices with regard to: (Kala)

  1. HIB Reports (trends, best practices, and adjustments needed for the 2017-‐2018 SY)
  2. Safety/Fire Drills (any changes, updates, clarifications for 2017-‐18)
  3. Arrival/Dismissal Procedures (any safety concerns, updates for 2017-‐18)
  4. "Team" Information-‐e. school safety, CPR, etc. (determine members of each team, set tentative meeting dates for 2017-‐18)
  5. Cafeteria/Recess concerns (nut-‐free tables, sports, indoor recess)

SEPAC: Montclair SEPAC (Montclair NJ Special Education Parent Advisory Council) Montclair SEPAC(Gina)

PlanetCivic – Buddy System: This will be a new initiative for the 2017-‐2018 SY, in which older students and peers can be trained to engage peers and younger students, especially vulnerable students, to create a friendly atmosphere on the buses, in the cafeteria, and on the playground where there are currently and historically complaints about teasing, bullying, unsafe and anxiety inducing behaviors. (Barbie)

Curriculum Related Initatives: (Everyone)

  • MakerSpace: A makerspace is a collaborative work-‐space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools. These spaces have a variety of maker equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, cnc machines, soldering irons and even sewing A makerspace however doesn’t need to include all of these machines or even any of them to be considered a makerspace. If you have cardboard, legos and art supplies you’re in business. It’s more of the maker mindset of creating something out of nothing and exploring your own interests that’s at the core of a makerspace.
  • Spelling Bee
