CAST OF CHARACTERS PARADE

Join in the fun at the annual Hillside Cast of Characters Parade on Friday, Oct. 25th at 2:30pm. Every year our students show off their imagination and creativity as they dress up like their favorite characters and march around Hillside School.

Costume Reminders:

• Please dress your child so that their costume can be put on top of their clothing.
• Please send costumes to school in a bag, DO NOT send your child to school dressed in their costume.
• Absolutely no masks, (toy) weapons, and/or violent images will be allowed.

Procedures:

• Homeroom Parent/Caregiver Volunteers must sign-in at the Main Office at 1:45pm. Homeroom teachers will coordinate who the homeroom volunteers are.
• Families should go directly to ST. LUKE’S PLACE for viewing. We are asking parents to line up on St. Luke’s Place as ALL grade-levels will parade down the sidewalk for you to marvel and cheer them on!
• Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you do not wish for your child to participate in this school activity.
• After the parade, the only parents allowed to enter the building are the assigned Homeroom Parent/Caregiver Volunteers. All other parents will be invited to the front lawn for coffee and tea until dismissal time.
• If you are planning to pick-up your child at dismissal, and this is not your child’s regular dismissal procedure, then please remember to send a note to the homeroom teacher.
• Children will NOT be able to be picked up early. All students will be dismissed at 3:35pm.
o ALL 4th and 5th graders must be picked-up by a designee on the FRONT LAWN (Orange Rd.).

COAT DRIVE DONATIONS NEEDED
From now until November 22nd please drop your CLEAN and GENTLY-USED infant, kids and adult WINTER coats in the collection bin in the Main Office. Last year, Hillside collected 57 coats for the Jersey Cares Coat Drive. This year’s goal is 75 coats!   Please contact Trente Miller if you have questions.

SEPAC MEETING OCT 28TH
The next meeting of the Special Education Parent Advisory Council will be held on October 28th, 2019 from 7-8:30pm at Charles H. Bullock Elementary School. This meeting will feature a presentation by the SPAN Parent Advocacy Network on the transition of students with disabilities/special needs from school to adult life. This presentation will provide strategies and resources to increase students’ outcomes for life after high school and will benefit families of children of all ages. Please register in advance of the meeting here.

HILLSIDE ANNUAL APPEAL CAMPAIGN
There is still time to participate in Hillside’s 1st Annual Appeal Campaign. The annual appeal dollars will go directly to the school and will have a great impact on what we can do this year. No contribution is too small and every donation is greatly needed and appreciated. Donate online. All contributions are confidential and will only be seen by the PTA Treasurer. The Hillside PTA is a non-profit organization so all donations are tax deductible and may be eligible for corporate matching programs.

JOIN THE HILLSIDE PTA
We encourage all parents to join the Hillside PTA. Their goal is to support and advocate on behalf of our students in school and in the community. The PTA provides parent education and supports many school activities that strengthen the home‐school‐community partnership. Join today!

SOCK-TOE-BURR
Happy Sock-Toe-Burr!
During the month of October, Rooms 1 and 103 will be collecting brand new pairs of socks of all sizes to be donated to Toni’s Kitchen! New socks provide health, warmth, and cleanliness. Let's warm hearts and toes by donating! Packaged socks can be dropped off and donations will be brought to Toni's Kitchen by Ms. Bartol's Food Science Class in November!

3rd GRADE AESTHETIC REGISTRATION
3rd Grade Aesthetic Registration is now open and will remain open until Thursday, October 24.

During registration, students will be selecting aesthetic courses for Cycle 1. In November, parents/guardians will register for the remaining cycles of the 2019-20 school year. Please read over the course offerings sheets prior to selecting your courses. This will allow you to plan out the rest of the school year, so your child is able to take as many of their first choices as they can.

For course descriptions, please refer to Course Descriptions Catalogs that can be downloaded from the Hillside School Homepage on the Montclair Public Schools District Website.

A Word from Ms. Scott…
Hello Hillside Families!
Food for thought...
Instead of asking your child how their day was, try playing "Rose, Bud, Thorn" with them. Ask your child what was your...
• Rose- something that was good/positive or made you smile or laugh today.
• Bud- something you are looking forward to.
• Thorn- something that was challenging or disappointing today.
And a couple of reminders 😊...

Anti-Bullying Posters for the annual "Let's Have a Voice" contest should be submitted to homeroom teachers by Monday, October 28, 2019. Please encourage your child to submit a poster as every ounce of information helps us keep Hillside a safe, bully-free space for the entire school community. Ideas for posters can be found on the instruction sheet that was sent home last week. Please ensure your child reads through all of the instructions prior to turning in their poster to make sure meets the requirements for submission into the contest.

The first meeting for Little Brother to Brother will take place on Monday, October 25th right after school. Little Brother to Brother, is a community based program that offers all males in grades 4 & 5 a safe place where they can hear from others their age, talk about what is really going on in their lives and work together with mentors and peers to make choices that bring them closer to fulfilling their goals.

Little Brother to Brother is a wonderful program for our little guys to be involved in. If you haven't had a chance to look at the website or sign your child up please take a moment to do so. Additional information, as well as applications to join the program, can be found at teenmentoring.org

Have a great weekend!!
