Hillside Weekly News

Many thanks to everyone who came out for the Boogie Bash last Friday night. We hope everyone had a fun evening! The PTA extends a huge thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to donate food, baked goods and to help run Boogie Bash. But the Boogie Bash could not have happened without the leadership and dedication of: Leslie & Jim DeMarco, Trente Miller, Holly Lehr-Hahn, Amy Dallmann, Betty Shvetz, Marzena Del Gaudio, Donyale Pipkins-Conway, Erica Ajayi, Karen Andes, Paul Joseph, Derick Deysel, Brian Fleisher, Susan Gardner Zartman, Jennifer Brown and Tessa Vining.

Here’s a look at what’s inside this week’s issue:

• Coin Challenge Kicks Off Today!
• Minted.com Fundraiser
• Election Day Bake Sale
• Scholastic Book Fair Nov 11-15- Volunteers Wanted
• Coat Drive Donations Needed!
• Curriculum Night Nov 25th
• Play Production Fundraiser
• A word from Ms. Scott

The Coin Challenge kicked off today and will run through Nov.15th. Donate your loose change to Hillside and help purchase books for our school community. Every year Hillside classes compete to collect the most coins to help fund teachers' classroom wish lists. This year the class that collects the most money in coins will win a Game Day and Pizza Party! There will be one winning class in each grade. All the proceeds go to fund books for the Hillside community. To participate, you can send coins with your child in bags or other easily accessible containers. No bills please.

The Hillside PTA is partnering with Minted.com for the month of November! Starting on November 1 through November 30, shop at Minted.com for your holiday cards & holiday gifts and use the special code FUNDRAISEHILLSIDES at checkout. This code will give you 15% off your total order and then Minted donates 15% of your total order to Hillside! Anyone can use the special code, so please share with family and friends (just don't post to any coupon sites - then they will invalidate our code).

Tuesday, November 5 is Election Day, so it's Bake Sale time at Hillside! We are looking for volunteers to bake or purchase baked goods for Tuesday, November 5 along with volunteers to help staff the bake sale table during the day. Thank you! Click here!

Thank you Hillside for your help! So far we've collected 35 Winter Coats for the Jersey Cares Coat Drive. You still have until November 22nd to drop your CLEAN and GENTLY-USED infant, kids and adult WINTER coats in the collection bin in the Main Office.
*** We so appreciate your generosity but please, bring only WINTER COATS; we can’t pass on anything else like vests, sweaters, or hats***
Please contact Trente Miller if you have questions.

The Hillside Scholastic Book Fair opens for business Monday, Nov. 11th and will be open until Friday, Nov. 15th. As in past years, the students will shop on their own during scheduled class periods and lunchtime. We need lots of volunteers to help with set up, clean up, for family night, our grandparent event and class visits. Sign up here!

Our 2nd annual Grandparents and Special Loved Ones Afternoon Tea is on Wed, Nov 13th 3:30-6:30pm. It’s a great opportunity for grandparents to shop for holiday gifts for their grandchildren. But you don’t have to be a grandparent or special loved one to attend. Everyone is welcome! So if you can’t make it Thursday night, come Wed! Light refreshments will be served.

We are excited to welcome the author J. A. White (Nightbooks and The Thickety Series www.jawhitebooks.com) to our family night and book signing on Thursday, Nov 14th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. He will be reading an excerpt from his new novel Shadow School and signing books purchased at the book fair. Bring the whole family for a fun night of book shopping! The first 200 shoppers at both after school events will get a FREE reusable shopping bag.

PAY ONLINE! No cash on hand for the book fair? No worries — Scholastic Book Fair is now offering eWallet as a secure, cash-free way for your child to shop at the fair. There is no charge to set up an eWallet. Simply create an account and authorize a spending limit to have funds immediately available for your child to choose the books they wish for! Visit our book fair page to sign up

Curriculum Night is Monday, November 25th, 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Hillside. This will be an opportunity for parents/caregivers to gain a better understanding of the Math and English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum used for our students. Teacher subject leads will explain how student's are taught, what materials are used, and the content available to students and parents at home to support in class learning. Parents/caregivers will have the opportunity to ask questions about in-class learning and the best approaches for homework. In addition, the middle school math options will be explained. Childcare will be available.   PLEASE RSVP HERE.  Questions? Please contact Kimya Nilsen.

Please mark your calendars for November 7th – to order or dine in at Mr. Dino’s Pizzeria and Restaurant and make sure you tell them you are a Hillside family as 15% of all funds collected from the Hillside community that day will be given to the school to help pay for the upcoming production of “Annie.” November 7th is a day when the kids will not have school so we are hoping this will lead to an increase in sales. Delivery will be available all day!

And now a word from Ms. Scott...

5th Grade- Alva Penalver

Congratulations to the winners, finalists, and all the students who participated on a job well done!!! Thank you for creating such amazing artwork with messages that will help keep Hillside a safe space for all of us.

CALLING ALL 4th and 5th GRADE BOYS!!!!!

Hello Families,

We've all heard the African Proverb "It takes a village to raise a child". Well we can never have too many members in our village when it comes to guiding our children toward greatness. We've already built a home-school connection to support our youngsters but I also wanted to make you aware of another opportunity that would benefit them.

Little Brother to Brother will be taking place here at Hillside every Monday, from 3:45-5:00 p.m.. The tentative start date is November 11, 2019, provided there are at least 4 students enrolled.

Little Brother to Brother is a wonderful program for our little guys to be involved in. It's a community based program that offers all males in grades 4 & 5 a safe place where they can hear from others their age, talk about what is really going on in their lives. The guys work together with male mentors from the community (i.e. coaches, police officers, teachers, etc.) and peers to make choices that bring them closer to fulfilling their goals. In addition to school-based activities and conversations, they also take trips and take part in community service activities. Once they've left Hillside, the Brother to Brother (grades 6-12) program continues as they get older, essentially providing them another level of community involvement and support throughout the rest of their schooling.

There is no fee for Little Brother to Brother and ALL of the boys are automatically accepted into the program. However you do need to complete an application which requires you to submit proof of income and address. Because the program is state funded, they need to evidence they are serving all grade 4-12 males in the community, regardless of income. If you are uncomfortable submitting your income information via the online application, you can visit their office at 11 Pine Street on Tuesdays from 5:30-7 p.m. to submit proof of income/address in person.

It really is a great way to allow our growing young men a way to connect. All of the students who participated last year enjoyed their experience. Please take a moment to look at the website for more information or sign your child up for the program. I really believe our little guys will benefit from what it has to offer.

**Pokemon Cards
Pokemon cards will no longer be allowed at Hillside School. Unfortunately, there have been multiple incidents recently of students disappointed with trades, cards going missing, and accusations of theft. This has become disruptive to the school day***
