Hillside Weekly News

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you all have a wonderful holiday break. Here are a few things you need to know for next week:

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Hillside Scholastic Book Fair a huge success! A special shout out to the book fair committee: Holly Lehr-Hahn, Tia Adams, Diana Kabashi, Jill Montague and Laura Elleman. We also want to thank Dr. Anglin, Mr. Adamo, Ms. Stacey Best and Mara Mazur for their support. And of course we could not have done it without our amazing volunteers: Leslie DeMarco, Cheryl Rafferty, Susie Sonneborn, Susan Gardner, Kimya Nelson, Diane Tehranian, Karen Andes, Jen Herman, Amy Price, Deanna Vergara, Linda Kow, Joby Abragan, Erin Walter, Trente Miller, Gina Fortt, Erica Ajayi, Tinu Joseph, Myrna Poole, Deirdre Slavin, Tessa Vining and Dana Nicholas. We apologize if we missed anyone!

We are grateful to all the families, caregivers, teachers and students who contributed to this year’s coin challenge! We couldn’t buy books for the Hillside community without your generosity. Every year the competition is fierce, but in the end only one class per grade wins. This year our winners are by grade are: 3rd – Chung, 4th-- Gorcica and 5th – Bostic. Each winning class will have a special SLIME class party in January.

The 3rd grade course list is on Hillside’s website. On the new website, drag the cursor over Aesthetic Courses and click on the 3rd Grade Course Offerings Link. You will see another link for the Cycle 2 Courses. Registration will open on Monday, November 26th.

It's time for the annual Nauna's + Drama fundraiser! Hillside Play Production will receive 10% of ALL proceeds on Tuesday, Nov 29th! Dine in, carry out or have food delivered!

Please go to Nauna's and help us raise money for our play!

Please join us for a fun, cozy gathering of Nishuane & Hillside parents/friends who knit, crochet or want to learn (or just keep us company). This informal event will take place on Wednesday, November 28th from 6 to 9 pm at Yarnia (147 Valley Road). Yarn has been donated for those wanting to make hats for the holiday gift drives. Please email Kimya Nilsen at to RSVP so we have an accurate headcount.

Can’t make this event? Please sign up here to see how you can still make winter hats to assist our Make-A-Wish gift drive that starts November 30th.

Please join us on Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 6:30-8:30 pm for a screening of the movie Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age. In Screenagers, filmmaker Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, Screenagers reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Bonus #1: Hillside dad and host of CNBC's Fortt Knox, Jon Fortt, will moderate a post screening discussion immediately following the viewing of Screenagers

Bonus #2 for the Hillside community: our 5th graders will also be shown Screenagers the same week as the parents. Ms. Scott, the Hillside Student Assistance Counselor, will be following up with each 5th grade homeroom to conduct a guided discussion around how the students experienced the movie.
