The program is designed to promote academic achievement and preparation for college or trade school as well as to promote healthy lifestyles and to develop anger management awareness and techniques to improve decision-making and problem-solving skills. Student enrollment is free and there are countless lessons and activities our students will be exposed to when they join.

The Coin Challenge officially started Monday, Oct 29th and will run through Nov.15th. Donate your loose change to Hillside and help purchase books for our school community. Every year Hillside classes compete to collect the most coins to help fund teachers' classroom wish lists. The class that collects the most coins wins a special SLIME class party! There will be one winning class in each grade. So far in the lead by grade are: 3rd – Masuzzo, 4th-- Gerdes and 5th – DesLonde. It’s still early in the competition so gather your change and get in the game! All the proceeds go to fund books for the Hillside community. To participate, you can send coins with your child in plastic bags or other easily accessible containers. No bills please.

The Hillside Book Fair is the week of Nov 12th-16th, with evening family night on Thursday, Nov 15th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This year we are lucky to be joined by new author and Montclair High School Senior Karuna (Maya) Savoie, who will read and sign copies of her debut book, the action-packed thriller, The Lore of Ramridge.

On Wed, Nov 14th between 4pm-7pm we encourage students to invite their grandparents or other special loved ones to the NEW Grandparents Afternoon Tea. It’s a great opportunity for grandparents to shop for holiday gifts for their grandchildren. But you don’t have to be a grandparent or special loved one to attend. Everyone is welcome! So if you can’t make it Thursday night, come Wed! Refreshments will be served.

As in past years, the students will shop on their own during scheduled class periods and lunchtime. We need lots of volunteers to help with set up, clean up, for family night, our grandparent event and class visits. The class schedule will be available shortly if you want to volunteer during your child's class visit. Sign up here to volunteer:

NEW this year! Pay ONLINE! No cash on hand for the book fair? No worries — Scholastic Book Fair is now offering eWallet as a secure, cash-free way for your child to shop at the Fair. There is no charge to set up an eWallet. Simply create an account and authorize a spending limit to have funds immediately available for your child to choose the books they wish for! Visit our book fair page to sign up now!

The Hillside Cares Coat Drive will run from Nov. 1 – 16th. We are asking for donations of clean and gently used adult and children’s coats to benefit NJ Cares. You can drop-off items in the copy room next to the main office. Please email Sarah Jacobstein with questions:

Curriculum Night is Tuesday, November 13th 7 - 8:30pm at Hillside. This will be an opportunity for parents/caregivers to gain a better understanding of the Math and English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for our students.

We are in need of six volunteers: two to work the sign-in table and four to direct parents to the classrooms. Volunteering will not prevent you from participating, but may mean you arrive to each session a little late.

If you can help out, please sign up here. Send questions or concerns to SATp Co-Chairs Kimya Nilsen and Earl Beecham (
