Dear Hillside Community,
At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of a parent. Thank you for preparing your children to be active learners. Our classrooms are filled with happy, enthusiastically learning children who are prepared for success.

Per Dr. Ponds, the district will allow the use of playgrounds following CDC guidelines beginning Monday, May 24. Masks and three feet of social distancing are required. Teachers are to schedule an appointment for playground use with the Principal or designee and the high touch areas and equipment will be cleaned between groups.

Picture Day!
Picture Day is here! All Mounties will have their pictures taken during the school day on May 25. All Bulldogs will have their pictures taken during the school day on May 27.

Wear it Wednesdays
Wednesday 5/26  is USA Day! Wear red white and blue to kick off Memorial Day weekend. 
5th Grade Moving-Up Ceremony
We are actively planning for our 5th graders as they move-up and transition to the middle schools. We will host an outdoor Moving-Up Ceremony on Monday, June 21st at 11:30am. Specific details are in the works and will be forwarded to you all asap. 
IMANI 6th Grade Transition Summer Program
We are looking forward to another great summer of the IMANI 6th Grade Transition Program as we prepare 5th-grade students for the challenge of the 6th-grade curriculum.
During the month of July, students will read and role-play short stories from the 6th-grade Language Arts curriculum. Additionally, students will explore math concepts to better prepare themselves for success at the middle school level. 6th Grade Transition Flyer
Requesting Free Lunches
Free lunches are available to everyone until the end of June 2021 per the USDA. Lunches are distributed every Monday and Thursday. Students receive enough food for a few days. The lunches consist of snacks, frozen/microwave foods, and cereal. If you are interested in requesting lunches please answer “Yes” on the bottom of your child’s daily health screening form. 
Virtual Field Day 2021
Hillside is ready to sweat and have some fun with Field Day 2021, June 4th. Since this year it's going to look a little different, students will need to have some supplies on hand. Please refer to the attached link for a list of supplies. Students that are in person on June 4th, Bulldogs and All Day will need to bring supplies into school with them. AAPI Montclair Lantern Festival - 5/21 @ 7-9pm
Please join AAPI Montclair as we illuminate the park with hundreds of paper lanterns as a memorial to the victims of racial injustice, inequity, and violence. We stand together against the horrific convulsion of anti-Asian hate that has taken so many lives, and grieve for everyone lost to racialized violence.
AAPI Virtual Career Panel - 5/24 @ 6:30pm
AAPI Montclair is hosting a virtual career panel featuring our community members from a wide range of professions. This event is open to all, recommended for 5th graders.

Hillside Bookfair - THANK YOU!
The Hillside Book Fair was a HUGE success with over $7,700 raised. We thank all our families for supporting this major fundraiser event, for supporting our teachers with your donations to the e-wallets. Happy Reading! THANK YOU Diane Terhanian, Jen Herman, Laurie Goodstine, Tessa Vining and their many volunteers for all the hard work you put into making this beloved tradition possible this year especially.
5th Grade Events
Congratulations to the Hillside Class of 2021! 
If your child is in 5th grade, you should be receiving emails with detail for the following activities that are planned for 5th graders only. 
1) Yearbook Shout Out
A Shout Out is a short message, about 2-3 lines of text or 10-20 words and can be to a student, sibling, teacher or friend. Each Shout Out is $5.00 and is paid to the Hillside PTA to support the yearbook.Submissions must be sent by Friday, June 4 to be included in the Yearbook.

3) Fifth Grade Farewell Food Drive - 6/5 @10am
June 5th (Rain date: June 12th)     
Come say goodbye to the AMAZING Hillside fifth graders with one last day of service! All are welcome to the Fifth Grade Farewell Food Drive. Let's get the whole town involved! Donations will go to Toni's Kitchen to help combat food insecurity & support our neighbors in need. Volunteer slots are for fifth graders only.

Montclair SEPAC Monthly Meeting - 5/24 @ 7pm
Please join us for the next SEPAC Monthly Meetingon Monday, May 24th from 7-8:30pm, which will focus on "The Basics of an IEP." This meeting will feature special education advocates Cathy Tamburello and Liane Bass who will walk through a sample IEP to identify the various sections and provide best practices for parents to understand and contribute input to the document. Please feel free to submit questions in advance at

Hello Hillside Families and Friends!
Pfizer vaccines is now approved for children as young as 12 years old.  Please see the vaccine literature.  Here is the link to get vaccinated through Mountainside Hospital.  I want to remind you if your child has an injury and received medical treatment, I need our medical injury form filled out by their doctor upon the student’s return to school.If your child will be going to middle school in September please submit your child’s vaccines to me via email.
