A Note from the Principal’s Desk - 12.17.2021

Dear Hillside Parents/Caregivers:

We hope you enjoyed this unseasonably warm week!  Yesterday afternoon, during our Curriculum Thursday professional development, Hillside staff attended a virtual seminar presented by Principal Baruti Kafele. Principal Kafele spoke with the staff about cultural responsiveness and being an “Equity Mindset Teacher.” This engaging workshop supports the work we are doing at Hillside to have meaningful conversations to support all of our students.

Thanks, MFEE! The fifth-grade ELA teachers have gotten a grant for $600+ from MFEE to beef up their classroom libraries with the latest books from authors Jerry Craft, Jason Reynolds, Renee Watson, Jacqueline Woodson, Kwame Mbalia, and more. The grant proposal, entitled "Windows and Mirrors: Building Classroom Libraries that Represent All", will bring award-winning books into spaces where students browse and choose books multiple times a month. All students benefit when they read books with a diversity of characters. So-called "mirror books"—where students can see themselves reflected in the story—affect the self-worth of the child-reader. "Window books"—giving the reader a chance to see into other worlds—expand knowledge and promote empathy.

Message from Ms. Scott (School Counselor)

I am here to support our Hillside families in any way I can. In addition to email ([email protected]), I can be reached at 973.509.4200 x4297. Additionally please ask your child to join Ms. Scott's Google Classroom (class code jzelps7) where they will be able to access the I Need to See Ms. Scott Google form.  Lastly, I will be starting new groups in January. Please use the In Need of Counseling Survey to let me know if your child would benefit from being in a group. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns about your child’s social-emotional well being.

Note from Nurse Boyle

Based on the updated Regional Risk Matrix Report Essex County is now considered HIGH level.  Due to a close contact, and because your child is not FULLY vaccinated (your child is fully vaccinated two weeks after the second dose) your child must be quarantined for 14 daysIt is recommended that you get your child tested with a PCR test. We ask that you be on the lookout for the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 in your child for fourteen days. Symptoms can include but are not limited to fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, headache, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Not everyone will get all these symptoms. If you believe your child may have COVID-19, contact their primary care doctor for directions.
