HILLSIDE BLESSING BAGS AND PEACE NOTES PROJECT
Spread love & joy on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Blessing Bags Collection-January 2-16.
Blessing Bag kits are a wonderful way to help people in need in our community. Hillside class teams will collect specific items from January 2-16. (See class lists below) Beautiful, heart felt peace notes will be included in each bag. Bags will be delivered to Toni’s Kitchen at the MLK day of service on 1/20/20.

Peace Note Writing Event-January 16th, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Students, parents and caregivers are invited to spread the love to our neighbors in need. Together we will create heartfelt messages, which will be included in the blessing bags. Peace notes are words of encouragement meant to warm hearts and remind people that they are not alone and that they are cared for and seen. Students will learn the profound impact this simple gesture can have. This is going to be a very special evening! Tables will be set up in the gym with inspiring samples of peace notes and plenty of volunteers to help. There will be opportunities for students to share what makes them feel “seen” The peace notes will be included in the blessing bags and will be delivered on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Extras will go to Van Dyke Manor. Please join us!   We need 2-3 parent volunteers to help out during the Peace notes event. Please email Jodi Holmes if you are able to help.  Sign up here.   Questions? Contact: JodiFholmes@gmail.com

SCREENAGERS MOVIe SCREENING AT HILLSIDE
Hillside's School Action Team and MFEE are excited to announce a special viewing of the film Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience on Thursday, February 13th from 7-9pm, in the Hillside School Auditorium. It is free and open to all parents, caregivers and students in the district but is recommended for students in 5th grade or above.

Please RSVP to the following link by Wednesday, February 12th. Doors will open at 6:45pm, and the movie will start promptly at 7. Reservations are first-come, first-served. RSVP HERE.

As a follow-up to the original Screenagers, Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER examines the science behind teens emotional challenges, the interplay of social media, and most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety, and depression in our digital age. Immediately following the film, there will be small group break-out discussions. For more information on the film, see the trailer here.

The screening has been made possible by a generous grant from the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence. In case of inclement weather, the film will be shown at the same time on Tuesday, February 18th.

SPECIAL NOTE TO HILLSIDE PARENTS: The film will be shown to all Hillside 5th graders. After the film, students will participate in group discussions with school counselor, Ms. Scott. Parent discussion guides will be available at the screening on February 4th to facilitate conversations at home.

MFEE/MHS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL CONFERENCE

Don't miss out on MFEE/MHS Life After High School Conference for teens and their caregivers on Saturday January 11th, 2020 in the George Innes Annex, 141 Park Street, from 9 am - 12:45pm. This FREE event gives teens - and their parents! - inspiration, support and advice for navigating high school and post-high school life with confidence, creativity, and resilience.
It is open to 8th - 12th graders.
We've pulled together a cool group of people who will lead workshops addressing topics like: Finding Your Passion, Designing Your Comeback When Life Throws You a Curveball, Being Okay With Not Knowing Your Plan, Developing Support Networks, and Life isn't Linear. Teens can also explore "Try It!" workshops that teach them a new skill like mindfulness, financial literacy, and an interview bootcamp.
Parent workshops will address supporting the social and emotional health of teens...and of the parents who care for them!
Participants must register prior to the event and select their preferred workshops. Here is the registration link.

2019-2020 YEARBOOK
Dear 5th Grade Parents/Guardians,
The 5th grade Yearbook aesthetic is beginning to create the 2019-2020 Yearbook. This year, we would like to include your 5th grader’s baby picture. This is completely optional, of course, but it would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to have your child’s baby picture included in the yearbook, please send one hard copy, with your child’s first and last name and homeroom number on the back, to your child’s homeroom teacher. This is due by February 14, 2020. This photograph should only include your child and must be when they are under the age of three. All pictures will be returned. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. DesLonde or Mrs. Hart.
Thank you,
The Yearbook Staff
