Week 21 - 2/18/22

A Note from the Principal’s Desk - 2.18.2022

Dear Hillside Parents/Caregivers:

Exciting things are always happening at Hillside!!! Today we hosted our annual African American Read-In, organized by our third grade teacher Leslie Masuzzo. The National African American Read-In (AARI) is a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering African American books and authors. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. This initiative has reached more than 6 million participants around the world.

Tuesday - Wear black to show solidarity as we bring Black History Month to an end and develop a better understanding of the Black Lives Matter movement and why it exists

Wednesday - Wear a jersey or shirt with a number on it to show that everyone counts

Thursday - Wear “skin tone” colors (i.e. almond, peach, caramel, cinnamon, cream, cocoa, peanut butter, etc.) to show we are all working together, regardless of race, to expand social justice and racial equity

Friday - Wear Hillside gear/colors (blue&white) to show the Hillside community is united in doing the work to expand social justice and racial equity at Hillside Elementary and beyond

Mrs. Tiwari’s Class Monuments

The third grade students in Mrs. Tiwari’s class participated in a cross-curricular STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activity to build monuments dedicated to influential Black people. First, the students viewed famous and historic monuments from around the world. After researching an influential African American in their social studies class, students brainstormed and illustrated their ideas for their monument. Finally, students selected and used recyclable materials to demonstrate their knowledge of balanced forces from their science unit, Forces and Motion. Make sure you check out Mrs. Tiwari’s class monuments which celebrate Black History Month and provide a cross curricular STEM activity, which are displayed at Piazza Della Sole on Valley Road!

Please send me a copy of the test. If your child is not fully vaccinated and is exposed to a Covid positive person please contact me so I can review the quarantine procedure with you.  Have a great weekend!
