Dear Montclair Public Schools Students, Staff, Parents, School Partners and Community at Large,

Announcing Listening and Learning Sessions for Families and Community Members

As the chief learner in the district, I welcome the opportunity to learn more about your hopes, wishes and dreams for Montclair Public Schools. Please plan to attend one of the upcoming Listening and Learning Sessions. I hope to see you at the first one on Monday, May 14, from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Charles H. Bullock School Library.

These open public forums will offer our families and community members the chance to have their voices heard. Please refer to the flyer for details on some of the specific areas of reflection I encourage you to consider. In addition, I will make time to hear from staff in the upcoming months.

It is a tremendous privilege for me to serve as your Superintendent of Schools, and I look forward to meeting you and working with you during the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year - and many more years to come. I am extremely excited to spend the coming months of May and June speaking with our dedicated Board of Education, meeting many talented students, dedicated teachers, conscientious district and building leaders, committed and involved parents, and collaborative community members. I am especially appreciative of the time with our previous Interim Superintendent of Schools, Barbara Pinsak. And, I am thrilled she will be able to remain in the coming months as a consultant to further assist with a smooth transition.

My transition into the new role of Montclair Public Schools Superintendent has - and continues to be - very positive and welcoming, and I thank you all! My intention from this day forward is to continue to build upon the tradition of "Excellence" that Montclair Public Schools has come to represent. Through an unrelenting commitment to students, collaboration with all district stakeholders, transparent communication, I promise to show up every day with the unwavering commitment to service. In alignment with New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) policy/procedures, New Jersey law and Montclair Board of Education policy/regulations, you have my word that my decisions will always be made with our students’ best interests at heart.

Public education, when done well, provides an opportunity to meet each student where he/she/they are and move him/her/them forward to their choice path of promise and opportunity. As educators, it is our responsibility to prepare our children for this future, to help them build a post-secondary plan that readies them for whatever path they choose to follow into adulthood.

In my entry plan, I identified goals for my first 90 days to guide my understanding:

  • Focus on ensuring a world class education for each student;
  • Build a collaborative relationship with the Board of Education, Montclair Principals Association (MPA) and Montclair Education Association (MEA);
  • Increase efficiencies to ensure strong support for our schools;
  • Establish a respectful culture centered on the teaching and learning dynamic, and
  • Build public trust through transparent and honest communication.

Please feel free to send me your thoughts via email or by phone at 973-509-4010.

In pursuit of excellence, equity and access for each student,

Dr. Kendra V. Johnson
Superintendent of Schools
